Our Review
In June 1997 marine engineer Tom Degen, together with IT project manager wife Jean, took a weekend drive to the Hunter Valley with no particular plan in mind, but as a consequence of that drive, became the owners of an 11ha wild, heavily wooded bush block, dotted with boulders, with no fencing or water. The weekend drive became an every weekend drive to mount their John Deere tractor and slowly but surely clear tonnes of timber, remove the boulders, build a dam and work the soil. In Sept 2001 they planted 1.8ha of shiraz, 1.7ha chardonnay and 1ha semillon, and by '13 opened the cellar door and Vine Stay (now accommodating 20 guests). -JAMES HALLIDAY

Information
Our cellar door opened in Sept 2013 and is a fresh addition to the Hunter’s prized single-vineyard offerings and provides a personalised approach to cellar door hospitality. Bookings are recommended. However, we always welcome walk-ins as our business was built from visitors who just drove up our driveway for a wine taste.

Located high above the surrounding vineyards with sweeping views across the Brokenback Range, the 54-acre estate of Degen Wines is privately set in the beating heart of Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley wine country. Accommodating 22 guests in luxury surroundings.
