The Barossa region – which encompasses the two distinct Geographical Indications (GIs) of the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley – has a rich history of winemaking. It is home to some of the world's oldest continually-producing vines, with some dating back to 1843. The key varietals produced are shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, grenache, semillon, chardonnay and riesling.
Undoubtedly, any visit to the Barossa will largely revolve around wine. But aside from visiting cellar doors and admiring the long stretches of vineyards, there's plenty to do. Hike up to Mengler Hill Lookout (located in the Barossa Sculpture Park), for a spectacular view, or stop by the Barossa Farmers Market for a bite to eat on Saturdays.
Despite the age of the region, the Barossa is far from old in its ways. As you will see from the list of wines below, the Barossa is brimming with new producers making wine in the region. Here are 10 wines to try that have been rated highly recommended or outstanding by Tasting Team member Dave Brookes.
