Any wine that rates between 94 and 100 points in the Halliday Wine Companion is considered to be outstanding, of the highest quality, and often with a distinguished pedigree.
And so it follows that 99 points is an extraordinary achievement; between 2010 and 2016, just 10 wines have found themselves in that league.
Below is a recap of those standout 99ers. As an aside, in every year, the 1914 Seppeltsfield 100 Year Old Para Liqueur scores 100.
Asked for his take on it, James says: "The list is dominated by Australia’s fortified wines. If it weren’t for the 100 points given each year to the unique 100 Year Old Seppeltsfield Para, the domination would be even greater, simply because they are unchallenged by the wines of Spain, Portugal and Madeira."
