Eight of the best family-friendly wineries in Tasmania

By Andrew Zuccala

This guide is for those seeking incredible wine experiences around Tasmania where you'll feel welcome to bring the whole family along – kids included.

There’s no better way to sample Tasmania’s top-tier sparkling wine, pinot noir and chardonnay than to do so while looking over the state’s spectacular natural landscape. Thankfully, there are countless wineries with cellar doors to choose from – including those that are family-friendly.

At these cellar doors, the kids are more than welcome to join you while you explore the winery and vineyard, dine at the restaurant, and make your way through tasting flights. Here, there’s food for the little ones to eat, and often activities to keep them entertained.

But those visiting these wineries without kids don’t need to fret. They don’t transform into giant resort-style playgrounds made just for families – they simply make enough room for everyone.

Find our list of the best family-friendly cellar doors in Tasmania right here – to bookmark for your next trip down to the Apple Isle.

Stefano Lubiana

Stefano Lubiana produces some of the best sparkling wines in Tasmania (and in Australia for that matter) as well as top-tier pinot noir and chardonnay. If you are a wine lover, you’re going to want to take your time exploring their range. So, naturally, you should visit their family-friendly cellar door. Tasting flights (of six wines) start at just $25 per person, with the kids free to join you around the winery. The Italian restaurant also caters to the little ones, with its daily changing menu that champions locally produced ingredients – grown in accordance to the rules of biodynamic agriculture. When the weather is behaving, be sure to score a table on the vine-covered patio, letting the kids run free across the lawns.

Riversdale Estate

Riversdale Estate (just 20 minutes from Hobart) produces consistently good – sometimes outstanding – wines, and is one of the very best family-friendly wineries in Tasmania. Come summer, we love grabbing one of their picnic packages and spending the afternoon out on the lawns. You can also take the kids inside for a high tea experience, or simply enjoy a long lunch at the French bistro. What's more, the estate also includes luxury French Provincial-style cottages overlooking the vines where you can spend a few nights.

Apogee

Apogee is a purposely small sparkling wine venture – with the team only producing between 10,000 and 20,000 bottles per year. This not only helps them keep quality high, but it means visiting the vineyard is extra special. The cellar door is only open by appointment, making for a very intimate experience – you can be sure the kids won’t be bothering anyone else. Tastings will only cost $20 per person (for four wines and a series of hors d'oeuvres), plus the kids are sure to love watching a hand disgorging demonstration.

Evenfall

Evenfall – located just 15 minutes from Launceston – is unique in that it acts as the cellar door for three wineries. Evenfall showcases its own wines alongside those from Bellebonne and Wellington & Wolfe. Kids are welcome to join parents in the main restaurant and out on the deck and lawns overlooking the picturesque Tamar River. Come summertime, you can happily spend a long afternoon with the family out here, as you lazily drink and eat the day away.

Mewstone Wines

Mewstone Wines has one of Tasmania finest cellar doors – it’s small, contemporary and boasts unbeatable views across the countryside. The wine tasting offering is also fabulous, with guests getting to try eight to nine seasonal wines for only $25. Kids are more than welcome to join you here, but be sure to book in advance – there are a highly limited number of seats and they do book out. And while the kids won’t be drinking wine, they will be more than happy with the seasonal food platters.

Utzinger

Like many of the best small wineries that are family-friendly, Utzinger is a by-appointment-only cellar door. Either drop by just for a tasting (five wines for $20 per person), or opt to take the kids on a behind-the-scenes experience. During a 1.5 hour tour, you’ll get taken around the property by the winemaker – getting to know all about the art of making wine – before enjoying an extended wine flight tasting and small cheese plate.

Grey Sands

One thing that helps Grey Sands’ cellar door stand out is the lavish garden surrounding the building. The owner, Bob, has a great love for gardening and has planted a huge array of unusual plants for guests to wander around and enjoy – no matter the time of year. Enjoy your tasting flight looking out over the gardens and vineyard while letting the kids run free out in front of you. This is the perfect spot to let them tire themselves out before you head to a more reserved cellar door in Tasmania.

Small Wonder

Small Wonder out in Tamar Valley is a brilliant spot to take the kids. Not only are they more than happy for you to bring them along and sit with you while you do a wine tasting, but they also offer winery tours that’ll keep them entertained for an hour or so. Meeting at the cellar door, your guide will take you over to their new facility, where you’ll start your tour with a tasting of their trophy-winning Blanc de Blancs. You will then be guided through the red and white wine production halls, their barrel rooms and the bottling line, while learning about each step of the winemaking process along the way. You’ll then be taken back to the quaint cellar door for a free tasting and snacks.
