Belinda and John Hughes are riesling freaks. They are obsessed with the variety, particularly experimenting with different styles and site expressions.
From fruit sourced across the Clare and Eden Valleys in South Australia, they craft dry, sweet, sparkling and fortified styles of riesling under their aptly named Rieslingfreak label.
There are around 20 different rieslings in the range, although what's produced each year depends on the season. The latest release includes the 2025 vintages of the No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, No. 8, No. 10, No. 12 and No. 14, as well as the special 2022 Rieslingfreak No. 1 Grounds of Grandeur Riesling. The wines were awarded scores from 93 to 98, with the vast majority sitting at or above 95.
Dave Brookes gave the flagship No. 1 98 points, saying: “It's like a liquid version of that light you get just after a late afternoon rain storm, all crystalline and shimmering like it's balancing on a fulcrum and everything falls into sharp relief.”
Only produced in exceptional vintages, the 2022 is just the third release of the No.1. Fruit was grown by Dan Falkenberg at Avon Brae vineyards just outside of Springton in the Eden Valley. Dan’s biodynamic and holistic approach to winegrowing, with a focus on natural, site-derived inputs and increased biodiversity in the vineyard, ensured a vigorous and distinctly unique natural fermentation, imparting complexity in both flavour and texture to the finished wine.
“It is an homage to the German GG style,” says Belinda. “A New World wine made in a distinctly Old-World way, paying respect to the individual vineyard, the grower and the grapes by capturing the very essence of the vineyard terroir from the best vines of the vintage.”
The 2025 vintage was more challenging, however still produced exceptional wines.
“The 2025 vintage was not without its challenges. 2024 was the driest year on record in South Australia, and the pressure on our growers to manage their limited water supplies was intense to say the least,” Belinda says. “Coupled with a severe frost event in September 2024, crops were much smaller than average across both the Clare and Eden Valleys.”
But, while this limited production volumes, “it also reduced the pressure on irrigation resources, producing smaller volumes of intensely flavoured berries. The 2025 rieslings are bursting with intense fruit flavour, meaning that even the dry rieslings with high levels of natural acidity achieve perfect balance without a hint of residual sugar.”
While you might be lucky enough to find the No.3 Clare Valley Riesling and No.4 Eden Valley Riesling in independent wine stores, Belinda and John recommend signing up to the Rieslingfreak mailing list or browsing their rieslings at rieslingfreak.com to avoid missing out.
Even better if you can visit their Tasting Room in the Barossa Valley, where the full range (plus some very special limited releases) is available.

No.1 Riesling 2022
Eden ValleyJust the third time this flagship riesling from John and Belinda Hughes has been released and jeez Louise, it's some wine. It's the detail and tension that grabs you right from the get-go. It's like a liquid version of that light you get just after a late afternoon rain storm, all crystalline and shimmering like it's balancing on a fulcrum and everything falls into sharp relief. The purest of freshly juiced limes, Bickfords' lime cordial, just a murmur of oak spice, rose petals, frangipani, crushed stone, petrichor, grapefruit sorbet, Christmas lily and ozone. It sports the most mouth-watering and sapid of slatey lines, lies bone-dry on the palate and will cellar for decades if you can keep your mitts off it. A classic. -

No.14 Watervale Riesling 2025
Clare ValleyThis is a very striking wine. Crystalline, energetic, nervy and ultra pure. There's a tension in texture but also a pliancy – a tussle between how it captures flavour and feels skeletal while also offering a sluice of cool, juicy fruit. It marries pristine, tart citrus fruit characters, saline elements and incredibly complex layers of slate-like elements. It's succulent, fine boned and crackles with vitality. It's one to both gulp and to appreciate slowly. Such a distinct feel to this wine; it's coursing with minerality and so thirst-quenching. Outstanding. -

No.10 Zenit Riesling 2025
Eden Valley Clare ValleyA blend of 71/29% Eden Valley/Clare Valley, from a couple of the most outstanding vineyards of the year: the Lienert vineyard in Flaxman Valley and the Sandow Family vineyard in Watervale in the Clare Valley. Aromas of fresh limes, a splash of Bickford's lime cordial and some lemon and green apple further back in the mix. Hints of crushed stone, orange blossom and rose petals, makrut lime, lemon curd, bath talc, lime zest and lemongrass. Sleek and febrile, with a mouth-watering mineral driveline, just a suggestion of grapefruit pith and a tubular, uber-limey core of fruit that sails the truest of lines. Finishes dry and mineral-laden. -

No.2 Riesling 2025
Clare ValleyA shimmery, lightweight and ultra-pure riesling of high perfume, substantial minerality and wonderful delicacy. This is all gossamer and lace, trickles and rivulets of saline and brine in ultra-tart grapefruit juice, dashes of green herb, a touch of white pepper. It's skeletal and connected by pinpricks of flavour, but all of it adds up so clearly into a very elite wine. Don't expect power, but relax into the strikingly mouth-watering and refreshing nature of this light, fine-boned wine. Drink in its vigorous youth. -

No. 8 Schatzkammer Riesling 2025
Sweet | Clare ValleyThis wine sits in the medium-sweet zone for riesling. Notably slick and slippery in texture but with a core of stipple-pointed, super minerally acidity that helps lift and purify the wine. Golden Delicious apple, nashi pear, cumquat, lemongrass and crystallised ginger all feature here. It feels vividly fresh, even with the shimmer of honeyed gloss happening. It's supremely well-balanced, attractive and wildly drinkable stuff. -

No.12 Riesling 2025
Eden ValleyA riesling sourced from three small family-owned vineyards in the High Eden slice of Flaxman Valley in the Eden Valley. A finely focused wine this vintage, with lime and lemon in equal measure and some grapefruit peeking through. Hints of makrut lime, bath talc, crushed quartz, a splash of Bickford's lime cordial, ozone and clover blossom. There's a crackling mineral energy to this wine, with a high-tensile minerality. It's sleek and bone dry, with some serious sapidity and crystalline verve on show. Mouth-watering drinking; I love it! -

No.4 Riesling 2025
Eden ValleyRiesling sourced from the High Eden subregion of the Eden Valley and produced by that freak of riesling John Hughes. High-tensile and wonderfully focused as always. There are aromas of freshly juiced limes, green apple and grapefruit with a dab of soft spice, crushed quartz, sliced fennel, orange blossom, Christmas lily and ozone. Tightly coiled, with a crystalline focus, it zooms across the palate, leaving a limey wake. Finishes bone dry, nervy and lip-smacking. -

No.3 Riesling 2025
Clare ValleyA very neat and tidy expression that leans into the tension, chalky pucker and energetic drive of the variety. Very crisp, with a pink grapefruit tang and a haziness to texture that finishes juicy. A little sweeter citrus profile as it rolls away after each sip. Licks of quartz-like minerality, a bit of eucalyptus lozenge and some green apple, too. It's pure, vibrant and has bell-ring clarity for the variety and region. -

No.5 Riesling 2025
Clare ValleyAn off-dry style. This is well made; it marries attractive, juicy sweetness with a crackle of limey acidity and briny minerality. There's good perfume, bright, sweet citrus fruit flavours, a lick of honey, a crunch of flint and talc. Beautiful drink, simple, done so very well. Such a pleasing, easy-access wine, and a wonderful and exuberant expression of the style.
